Api abadi dari Mrapen juga digunakan untuk menyalakan obor Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON) sejak PON X tahun 1981, POR PWI tahun 1983, dan HAORNAS. Api Abadi Mrapen hinga kini diteruskan menjadi rutinitas tahunan pesta olahraga nasional dan internasional.

Pesta olahraga internasional yang menggunakan Api Abadi Mrapen untuk obornya adalah SEA Games XXVI 2011 pada 11-22 November 2011 di Jakarta dan Palembang. Selain itu juga untuk Asian Beach Games (ABG) I di Bali 2008, Asian Beach Games II di Muscat, Asian Beach Games di Oman 2010, dan Asian Beach Games III di China. Bahkan, rencananya Islamic Solidarity Games (pesta olahraga multievent negara-negara Islam dunia) 2013 di Pekanbaru, Riau, juga akan mengambil sumber api dari Api Abadi Mrapen.

Ada pula Watu Bobot yang letaknya berada di sebelah Sumber Api Abadi Mrapen. Menurut cerita barangsiapa dapat mengangkatnya maka akan tercapai keinginannya.

Sunan Kalijaga dan Sumber Api Abadi Mrapen
Cerita rakyat tentang Sumber Api Abadi Mrapen dikaitkan dengan masa akhir Kerajaan Majapahit yang ditaklukkan Kesultanan Demak Bintoro pada tahun 1500-1518 Masehi.  Saat itu Kesultanan Demak berada di sekitar Mrapen dan merupakan satu-satunya pusat pemerintahan Islam di Pulau Jawa. Berikutnya kesultanan yang dipimpin Raden Patah ini mengembangkan pola hidup yang dilandaskan ajaran Islam termasuk membuat pusat perdagangan, pendidikan dan penyebaran agama Islam.

Dalam upaya pembenahan wilayahnya, Kesultanan Demak Bintoro berupaya memboyong semua barang-barang warisan dari Kerajaan Majapahit. Salah satu yang terpenting adalah memindahkan Pendopo Kerajaan Majapahit untuk dijadikan serambiMasjid Agung Demak. Apabila Anda amati saat ini maka pada serambi tersebut terlihat perpaduan budaya Islam dan Hindu-Buddha.

Upaya pemindahan Pendopo Kerajaan Majapahit dipimpin oleh Sunan Kalijaga. Dalam perjalanan masuki wilayah Kesultanan Bintoro Demak rombongan ini mengalami masalah karena prajuritnya keletihan.
